Kontum’s major draw is the villages of the indigenous hill-tribes (called montagnards by the French). It is strongly recommended to go with a guide, since he or she will be able to communicate in the minority language and keep you from inadvertently breaking taboos.
If you are on a tight itinerary, it might be good to fix things beforehand, since they are often crowded with tour groups. Though some of the Bahnar villages actually form a part of Kontum’s eastern and western edge, the ones farther away are more interesting. Highlights would be the different kinds of rong, the cemeteries of the Jarai and joining in a rice-wine party with the locals.
Kon Tum is home to a large number of ethnic minorities, which make up 51% its opulation. Most of them are Ba Na, Xo Dang, Gie Trieng, Gia Rai, B’rau, and RoMan. Each of them has special and unique cultural features, which contribute to the cultural diversity of the region. Their traditional culture is reflected through the festivals like Cong Chieng festival (Gongs festival), Buffalo stabling, leaving –the – tomb, and new rice festivals.
Different from other tourist attractions in Vietnam, Kon Tum attracts visitors for its simple beauty, which is not featured by the landscape alone, but also by the friendly and sincere local people.
